Ms. Julie Broussard
GoodAfternoon, Honored Guests and Friends,
On behalf of the UN WomenChina Office, I am very pleased to be able to welcome you all to this inspiring2014 Women’s Media Award Ceremony.
UN Women is honored toco-organize this special annual event with the NetEase Women’s Channel. I wouldlike to thank the Chief Editor and Vice President of NetEase, Mr. Chen Feng, and his team. I also thank our panel judges: Prof. Li Yinhe, Ms. Liu Bohong,Mr. Liu Bing, Mr. Chen Feng, Ms. Cai Yiping, Ms. Song Shaopeng and Mr. MaLeijun for their contributions of time and expertise in making the difficultselection of winner from the many meritorious nominations.
Like in all other parts of the world, gender inequalityis the lived reality for women and men in China. The media often emphasizenegative stereotypes of women and men – that men are the bread winners andwomen are the housekeepers, that men are the leaders and women are the sexobjects. Yet, the media also has the power to change stereotypes. Everyone insociety, but particularly girls and young women, need to see images of women asleaders, scientists, innovators, and athletes. Similarly, we need images of menas fathers, homemakers, and supporters of the women and girls in their lives.
I am happy to see that this year’s Awards havetaken the theme of “Equality is Beauty” to promote Chinese women’s positiveimages in the mass media. The awardees are all outstanding women from differentfields appearing in the media in 2014. They were chosen because of their uniquecontributions to their field of work as well as for theirintelligence, independence, and ability to overcome difficulties. Each of them, in her ownway, challenged the prevailing stereotypes of what women can do and be. All ofthese awardees are role models for other women and girls to follow, indeed formen and boys to follow too. It is myhope that all media organizations – not just NetEase – will showcase more womenwho reflect positive images of intelligence, strength, and leadership.
Iwant to extend my sincere thanks to the NetEase Women’s Channel for itscommitment to promote gender equality in China. Without their tremendous work, this annual media award would not be possible.
Weare all looking forward to hearing the excited results of who the winners aretoday, but, more importantly, we are looking forward to a more gender equaland, consequently, more prosperous future for China and the whole world.
